ECU Health Chowan Hospital Sponsoring John A. Holmes High School Athletic Training Program

ECU Health Chowan Hospital is partnering with Edenton-Chowan Schools and John A. Holmes High School (JAHHS) to provide certified athletic training services to student-athletes.ECU Health Chowan Hospital is the official healthcare sponsor of the Edenton Aces athletics program and is helping to provide athletic training in an effort to promote fitness, increase performance, and coach students about injury prevention. Certified athletic training services will be offered to students at JAHHS.ECU Health Chowan Hospital President Jeff Dial stated, “ECU Health Chowan is excited to partner with Edenton-Chowan Public Schools to offer this vital program to Aces athletes. Keeping our students healthy and injury-free is a top priority and it aids us in delivering on the ECU Health mission to enhance the quality of life for the people and communities we serve, touch and support.”The program will cover all John A. Holmes High School sporting events including football, baseball, softball, wrestling, cheerleading, boys’ and girls’ basketball, tennis, soccer, and track. Courtney Phelps has been named as the high school's certified licensed athletic trainer. Phelps studied Athletic Training at Barton College and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 2008. Upon graduating, she pursued a Master of Arts Degree in Health Education and Promotion at East Carolina University, completing the degree in 2011. In 2017 Mrs. Phelps was awarded the NCATA Secondary School Athletic Trainer of the Year award. Mrs. Phelps has worked in all levels of athletics, as well as a physical therapy clinic during the course of her twelve years of practice. She is involved with the NC Coaches Association's East-West All-Star Games and is also the Athletic Trainer for the Edenton Steamers summer collegiate baseball team. Phelps is a member of the NCATA Leadership Institute and the NCHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

Dr. Bryan Bunn
 
Dr. Bryan Bunn with ECU Health Family and Sports Medicine-Edenton is now the official healthcare provider of the Edenton Aces and offers expertise in sports medicine. Dr. Bunn graduated from medical school at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. He then completed residency training at North Colorado Family Medicine Residency, Greeley, Colorado, followed by a fellowship at Cabarrus Sports Medicine, Concord, North Carolina. In addition to sports medicine, his areas of interest include preventive medicine, pediatrics, and geriatrics.
