About Us

Chowan Middle School faculty, staff, and administrators would like to welcome you to Chowan Middle School! We are very proud of our students, staff, and community. Our school earned the honor of being a NC School to Watch in 2010 and was re-designated as a School to Watch in 2013 and 2017. We have been recognized by the state of NC as an Exemplar Positive Behavior Intervention Support School for five years in a row! Our school has achieved high growth from the 2007-2008 school year through the 2012-2013 school year. We have accomplished these great achievements due to the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and parent support. To help us continue on this trajectory of excellence, you can do the following to support your child and our school:
-
Check your child's grades on a regular basis through the parent portal that will be available in 2014-2015. Question your child about his or her grades and give them feedback regarding your expectations. Contact the school and your child's teachers when you have questions or concerns.
-
Check your child's assignments through the learning management system available through the web or your child's Chromebook or in their school calendar provided to them by PTA. Ask them what they learned at school, what tests they are to study for, or to show you their homework and ask them if they need help.
-
Establish the expectation that your child read silently or aloud to you each and every night for at least 30 minutes. Talk to them about what they are reading. The more your child reads, the better reader and writer he or she will become.
-
Make sure your child is getting a good night's rest. Sleep deprivation can cause your child to struggle academically in school.
-
Make sure your child is here and on time each day. Although your child can make up assignments, he or she cannot make up the instruction that was lost that day. Also, picking your child up early on a continuous basis is harmful as well since he or she will be missing the same classes on a repeated basis. Please understand that if your child is sick, we want them to stay home.
-
Keep in touch. Provide a time each day for your child to talk to you about his or her thoughts or feelings. Contact the school or our counselor if you have concerns.
-
Get involved in our school by joining the PTA, attending conferences and school events, helping with athletics/band, and volunteering. If you would like to be involved and don't know the capacity that you could best serve the school, please call us for more information.
-
Sign up for the Bulldog Bulletin that is sent to parents via email weekly.. This will keep you updated on school events.
We are looking forward to another great year! Together, we can teach our students to “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be the Best You Can Be."
